Description

Kamwangi is one of three washing stations managed by the New Ngariama Farmers’ Cooperative Society, alongside Kainamui and Mathigira. This washing station, renowned for its fabled quality was established in 1975, and is strategically located in the rich volcanic highlands of Kirinyaga County. With its proximity to Mt. Kenya providing nutrient-dense soils and stable weather patterns, this has helped more than 1800 smallholder producers consistently produce excellent lots year over year, with distinctive cup quality and characteristics unique to the region.

This lot is an AB lot, meaning a slightly smaller bean size while still being classic of the region. The 1800 smallholders who contribute to this lot have an equally balanced 50:50 gender ratio, and each farmer typically manages about 0.1 hectares, collectively known as "garden farms," growing coffee as a primary income source alongside maize, beans, potatoes for sustenance. At the station, cherry sorting takes place on-site under the supervision of the factory manager, ensuring only ripe and uniform cherries proceed to pulping. After pulping, the coffee undergoes dry fermentation for 24 hours before being washed using clean water from the Nyamindi River. The coffee is then soaked for 6 hours and dried slowly on raised beds.

This coffee was sourced in partnership with our friends at Trabocca, based in the Netherlands. Trabocca is one of the premier sourcing partners with established multi faceted relationships based in Kenya, and one of the global leaders of sourcing from this region. This coffee is fully traceable, directly through Trabocca's channels.
