Juicy, white wine acidity make up this lovely lot which has been a favourite of ours for two consecutive years.
Janier Rodriguez has become a familiar coffee on our list now, as we purchased this full lot last year (it was tiny, only 2 bags!) but were so impressed that we chose to purchase his coffee again in 2021. Janier is a member of ASOPEP (Asociación de Productores Ecológicos de Planadas) Cooperative. ASOPEP operates in the dense agro-climatic conditions in the town of Planadas, which is one of the most interesting coffee towns in Colombia. This region was the birthplace of one of the biggest rebel groups in Colombia – FARC (born inMarquetalia, one of their villages), and as a result of its isolation with a lack of road access, many producers in this region began to develop their own models of territorialdevelopment.
ASOPEP is a very young organization, founded in 2013. There are 318 associated families –202 coffee producers and 116 cocoa producers. They are all small farms, with women managing the household and farming operations as well as the youngest generation fully involved in the coffee production, and are likely to carry on the family tradition of coffee farming. The group also champions home-made organic fertilizers and biological controls of fungicides and pesticides that go way beyond what is required by organic certifiers. The group is deeply committed to soil and water preservation, and the sustainable development of their community.
This lot was purchased through our friends and sourcing partners, Shared Source, who do an excellent job with pricing transparency, farmer support and finding stand-out lots that we are fortunate to be able to share with you!
